Delta State University, more often referred to as simply DSU, is a regional public university located in Cleveland, which is a city in Bolivar County, in the US state of Mississippi, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 14 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Cleveland serves as one of the 2 county seats of Bolivar County, the other one being Rosedale.
DSU was established in 1924, and it is one of the 8 publicly funded universities in Mississippi. The university had a White-only race admission policy, which ended in 1967, when the first African-American student, Shirley Antoinette Washington, was admitted. Currently, Delta State has an enrollment of more than 4000 students, and offers 12 baccalaureate degrees in 42 majors, including graduate programs of study for eight master's degrees, the Education Specialist degree and the Doctor of Education degree.
Delta State's athletic teams are known as the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen, who compete in NCAA Division II, and Gulf South Conference and New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference, in various sports, including in football, basketball, tennis, swimming, golf and diving. Among the Statesmen most notable achievements, there is the 2004 NCAA Division II national baseball championship and the 2000 NCAA Division II national football championship, including the Gulf South Conference Championship (football), won in 2007 and 2008.
Rowan Nathaniel House, a mid-20th century artist of some renown, Brent Leach, pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Jeanette W. Hyde, ambassador, are DSU's noteworthy alumni.
